Crumbs from the Master ‘s Table 40

1 Peter 1: 13-16 Crave the Word

Scripture 1 Peter 1:25-2:3New International Version

25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”this is the word that was preached to you. 2 :1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Crumbs This is the fourth call Peter makes for a changed life as our response to our salvation.Crave the Word” Before making this appeal he asks us to do some moral and spiritual spring cleaning ridding ourselves of attitudes and activities that stunt Christian growth, sins hated by God .

What are these vices ? They arise from selfishness which results in the premeditation of evil against another and the obsessive thinking which grabs us when someone has got something we want but have not got. Dishonesty can creep in, not being straight with our selves and putting on act in front of each other.. There is gossiping lies which leads to so much trouble.

These sins and sinful attitudes have converse virtues that combat them. (Romans 12:21 NIV  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.) The vices listed in verse 1 are all about how we relate to each other. The virtue that overcomes these malignancies is our passion for the word of God.

What is this word for which we should have passion? Scripture gives at least three clues. 1. In John 1 The Word is made flesh, Christ Himself. 2. In Romans 10:8 New King James Version  But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):.God brings to bear his word upon us through the conviction within and experience without but we must note that the word within coincides with the word preached 3. In 2 Timothy 3:16 NIV All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. That inspires me to write these articles

Queries ( for private thought or joint discussion) 1. Why are the vices of verse 1 so harmful ? 2. What things do we do if we have a passion for the Word ? 3. How do we “ taste” the Lord?
