Crumbs from the Master ‘s Table 42
1 Peter 2: 9-12 Identity and Behaviour
Scripture 1 Peter 2:9-12New International Version9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.. 11Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
CrumbsOften Scripture brings its truths to us through parables and picturesThey can be understood by using the context and the rest of Scripture. The pictures of the People of God in verse 9 comes from Exodus 19: 5-6. This does not meanthe Church and Israel are the same butitis the same God who works with both. . Being a chosen people reminds us that the initiative is of God. Aroyal priesthood is very special. Only in Melchizedek and Messiah are the functions of priesthood and kingship combinedand in us the people of God Because of our salvation we are uniquely placed to praise him. We have received mercy and light. As a people amongst peoples we are called to reflect is character, holiness. The last title of the people of God reminds us that we are God’s purchased possession. What a price! Being described as royal we are reminded that our position is due to the king and our function is for the king. That king is our Lord Jesus Christ.
. Queries( for private thought or joint discussion)1. All beieivers are priests . How dothey fulfil that function? 2. Whatabstensions should become part of our life style? 3.What aspects of Christian behaviourarelikely to appeal to twenty first century people?
