Crumbs from the Master ‘s Table 79 Milestones
Scripture Mark 1:9-13 NIV9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted[a] by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
Crumbs Jesus travels the path which all His followers must tread; baptism and testing. Jesus is not only the Son of God showing us what God is like; He is also the best of men showing us what human beings should be like. John’s baptism was for repentance of sin but Jesus had committed no sin. Matthew 3:13-15 tells us that John the Baptist realized this but in His reply Jesus explains that baptism is not only about dealing with sin but about doing what is right and living new life in the Spirit. The word from heaven is a divine endorsement of the ministry of Jesus which is described in the Gospels.
The Trinity is not taught explicitly in Scripture but here we read the Spirit moving Jesus to the right place and coming in a dramatic fashion. We hear the Fathers’ commendation and we see the Son experiencing it all
Amazingly the Spirit drives Him out into the wilds where He suffers nastiness-es common to people. He is hungry. He is alone and He is in danger. Hunger, loneliness and fear, this man suffered them all. Jesus also experiences the care of His Father through His angels. In our struggles we may know that comfort too.
Questions . 1.What does Jesus’ baptism teach us about our baptism? 2. What do we learn from Jesus about what a good person is like ?
3. How does Jesus’ trials and temptations help us?
