Crumbs from the Master ‘s Table 82
Jesus Healing
Scripture Mark 1: 29-39 NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he travelled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
Crumbs Jesus , son of Man, son of God shows us what we should be like and what God is like; the pinnacle of humanity and the heart of divinity. In day time they brought Jesus the sick. Were they those who lived a sabbath day’s journey from Peter’s house? And were those who brought the sick after dark those who lived beyond that limit? It was on the Sabbath and Jesus had gone to Peter’s house perhaps for a meal after his preaching but all that is suspended as Jesus attends to the needs of the sick.
So we see Jesus the ideal man. He is caring and He is available. Tired and hungry after preaching He responds to the needs of others. He seeks quiet solitude. He must pray. Was it the folk coming after dark that inspired him to go to other villages.
The crowds were facing two woes; physical disease and mental torment. The divine Son of God was equal and willing to deal with both. He was master of both material world and the world of spirits and the mind. Yet in the face of all this brokenness Jesus goes on preaching. He seeks to mend folk at the deepest level, their relationship with God. His call to repent and believe still rings in our ears today.
Questions 1. In what ways can we be like Jesus ? 2. What response should Christians make to the broken, human condition? 3. Why is important that Jesus is the Son of God ?
