Calming the Storm

Scripture Mark 4:35-41 New International Version35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!””

It is in the questions in this account that we discover the meaning of this miracle

Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” It is tempting to look down on the disciples for turning to Christ in the last resort; coming because of need rather than love. Is that not the way most of us come? No rebuke comes from Jesus but simply the inquiry about the cause of the distress

“Why are you so afraid? Jesus goes to the root of the problem as a peerless counsellor. Do you still have no faith? They had already seen the Lord in action There had been healings aplenty but when it comes to acting on this evidence they are not prepared to commit their safety into His hands

“Who is this? I believe an answer to this question is behind this miracle. Christ is revealing Himself as the King of the Kingdom of God. Even the elements kowtow to Him.He is Lord of creation. As the Prince of Peace enters a situation of Stormy chaos peace prevails. We rightly find great comfort in this miracle
