crumbs 135

Crumbs 135 No one knows!

Scripture Mark 13:32-37World English Bible

32 But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don’t know when the time is.34 “It is like a man, travelling to another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch. 35 Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning; 36 lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping. 37 What I tell you, I tell all: Watch.”

Crumbs

Much energy has been expended by Christians about working out what the last times would be like and similarly about the return of Christ. Diagrams have been drawn and calculations made. The Lord is quite clear about the purpose of this prophesy. He wants His followers to be praying and alert. Any moment we could meet our Maker. Are we ready?

There is a temptation to use verse 32 to discover details about the detailed structure of the Godhead but this is not the main point of the passage which is that the information the disciples were after is not available. The Saviour might come any time. We must learn to live in the certainty of the event and the uncertainty of its timing.

In verse 34 there is a hint at a stewardship ministry for the Christian believer. The Lord’s teaching, His grace revealed on the cross and the Gospel; all these are the legacy left in the stewardship of the Christian believer, to be protected yet also disseminated.

Questions

  1. What is the right approach to our Saviour’s prophesy ?

  2. How should we react to Jesus’ warnings ?.

3. What do the life and attitudes of the alert Christian look like ?
