Crumb 138

Crumbs 138 Meaning Well

Scripture Mark 14:27-31 WEB 27 Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’Zechariah 13:7  28 However, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.”

29 But Peter said to him, “Although all will be offended, yet I will not.” 30 Jesus said to him, “Most certainly I tell you, that you today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”31 But he spoke all the more, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” They all said the same thing.

Crumbs

I have heard sermons judging Peter’s denials. I am in no place to condemn him. His mistakes begin in this passage. There is something deeper than simple impetuosity. His mistaken attitudes are shown up. Some of us mayhave the same attitudes.

Peter regards himself as a cut above the rest. “Although all will be offended, yet I will not.” It is a mistake to compare ourselves with others. Each has his God given destiny and each God given grace.

Our Lord is very specific about what is going to happen but Peter seems not to notice but makes the bigger assertion that he was prepared to die. In many of us that there lies the answer to the problems of humanity. To discover Christ’s strength we have to discover our weakness.

Peter made a great promise on the basis of his own strength. “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” He could not deliver. I have sat through services in which the congregation has been led in making frightening promises .We need to be careful. Least we look down on Peter, Scripture records that all the disciples made the same promise.

What caused Peter’s assertion? It was what Jesus said about His future death and rising. Peter was assuring his Rabbi that he would stand by Him. Jesus was drawing Peter out. We see Jesus the pastor counselling a soul. The Gospels are full of Him interacting with His flock in this way. We need to study His technique and aims. A book awaits to be written by someone more skilled and experienced than me. “ Jesus ; Pastor and Mentor”.
