Crumbs36

Crumbs from the Master ‘s Table 36

1 Peter 1: 10-12 Hope through Salvation

Scripture 1 Peter 1:10-12 NIV10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Crumbs Writing to a diverse church ( Jew and Gentile), Peter emphasises certain aspects of Scripture.

1.Much of the Old Testament may be seen as a record of the prophetic pursuit of the truth. Verse 10 shows the work of the prophets as intense and meticulous. They were not used simply as recording devices but their struggles became the subject of Scripture.

2.The Messiah is a focal point of prophesy Verse 11 shows us that the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ were at the very centre of God’s dealings with humanity

3. Another point of prophesy is the salvation of mankind and that these prophesies are given for our advantage. This included Gentile believers as well

4. The unity of Scripture is shown in that the Spirit who revealed truths to the prophets is the same Spirit who works when the Gospel is preached.

5. The wonder of our salvation is emphasised by the fact that spiritual beings such as angels long to investigate these matters

Queries ( for private thought or joint discussion) 1. How does this passage affect our understanding of the Old Testament? 2. How does this study affect your attitude to Scripture ? 3. What are the essentials of faith revealed in this passage?
