Crumbs from the Master ‘s Table 35
1 Peter 1:3-9 Hope through Salvation
Scripture 1 Peter 1:3-9 New International Version 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Crumbs Writing to a scattered, suffering church, Peter emphasises certain aspects of our salvation
1.The new birth is a gift from God.( verse 3) . It was not our efforts that brought us to faith but the grace of God.
2.The new birth is seen as something positive; not only an escape. ( verse 4). Peter emphases what we are saved to, a living hope, an inheritance.
3. Jesus’ resurrection is essential in our salvation. ( verse 3). We all die. Jesus conquering death gives us hope and thisultimate hope in the is part of the Christian experience. ( verse5 )
5. Our present life is tough. In it our faith is tested and refined, becoming precious to God .( verse 7)
6. Salvation, our relationship with the Lord Jesus. is not only a future thing, but a present one; In the first century it gave Christians boundless joy. ( verses7-9)
Queries ( for private thought or joint discussion) 1. In what ways does our salvation affect us now? 2. How may we derive hope from our salvation. ? 3. What stops us from experiencing the joy early Christians knew ?
